Violence Erupts in Manipur’s Churachandpur Over Kuki-Zo MLAs’ Entry into Govt, 5 Hurt

Clashes erupt after demonstrations against the induction of Kuki-Zo legislators into the BJP led government security tightened across sensitive areas.

Manipur, Feb 06 : Fresh Churachandpur violence broke out in Manipur on Thursday evening after protests opposing the participation of Kuki-Zo MLAs in the BJP led state government escalated into clashes with security personnel, leaving at least five people injured and the district on edge.

The disturbance began around 6 pm in the Tuibong Main Market and Tuibong Bazaar areas, where large groups of demonstrators mostly youths assembled to protest the swearing in of BJP leader Nemcha Kipgen as Deputy Chief Minister and the expected inclusion of MLAs LM Khaute and Ngursanglur Sanate in the administration. Protesters burned tyres and discarded materials, shouted slogans, and attempted to force security personnel to retreat.

Security forces moved in to disperse the gathering, but the confrontation intensified as sections of the crowd engaged in stone-pelting. Authorities responded with baton charges and tear gas to regain control. Police said the injured sustained minor wounds, while reinforcements were deployed to prevent the unrest from spreading.

Rising tensions behind the protests
Discontent had reportedly been building since Wednesday, when Kipgen who represents Kangpokpi district took the oath virtually from Manipur Bhavan in New Delhi. Anger grew further following reports that multiple Kuki-Zo legislators were aligning with the government formation process.

Sources indicate that sections of the Kuki-Zo community remain aggrieved over the prolonged ethnic conflict in the state, citing heavy casualties and widespread destruction of homes and religious structures during earlier violence.

Security stepped up, situation remains fragile
Units of the Assam Rifles, including the Commander of the 27 Sector, were deployed to stabilise the area. Initial efforts to pacify demonstrators met limited success, prompting tactical repositioning by forces before additional crowd-control measures were implemented.

Senior security officials have since reached the district to supervise operations aimed at restoring normalcy. Authorities described the situation as tense, with personnel stationed at key locations.

Community response and political fallout
The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), regarded as the apex tribal body, announced a social boycott of Kuki-Zo legislators who took part in the government formation. Of the ten Kuki-Zo MLAs in Manipur, three have so far aligned with the process—seven belong to the BJP, while the others are linked to regional groups.

Several community organisations have called for a shutdown in Churachandpur on Friday and signalled plans for demonstrations in other Kuki-Zo inhabited districts, raising concerns about further unrest. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as more details are awaited.
