India Adds Six Medals on Day Two of WPAC 2025; Yogesh Kathuniya Claims Silver in Men’s Discus F56

New Delhi, Sept 30: India’s two time Paralympic medallist Yogesh Kathuniya continued his remarkable form at the World Para Athletics Championships 2025 (WPAC) by securing the silver medal in the men’s discus F56 event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday.

The 28-year-old registered his best throw of 42.49m on his second attempt, finishing behind Brazil’s Claudiney Batista, who took gold with a throw of 45.67m. Greece’s Konstantinos Tzounis claimed bronze with a distance of 39.97m.

This marks Kathuniya’s third consecutive silver at the World Para Athletics Championships, following his podium finishes in the 2023 (France) and 2024 (Japan) editions. He also won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, finishing behind Batista.

Kathuniya, who was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome at the age of nine, began his journey in Para sports in 2017 while in college. His consistent performances have made him a key figure in Indian para-athletics.

Monday was a stellar day for India at WPAC 2025, with the country claiming six medals overall   two golds, three silvers, and one bronze.

Other Highlights:

Rinku Hooda won gold in men’s javelin F46 with a record-breaking throw of 63.81m, surpassing the previous championship record of 61.89m set by China’s Guo Chunliang in 2015.

Sundar Singh Gurjar earned silver in the same event with a throw of 64.76m, adding to his Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 bronze medals.

In men’s high jump T63, Shailesh Kumar and Varun Singh Bhati clinched gold and silver respectively.

Deepthi Jeevanji secured silver in the women’s 400m T20 event.

With these performances, India continues to assert its dominance in para-athletics, raising hopes for an even stronger showing in upcoming global competitions.
