NC slams Police high-handedness on Omar Abdullah, senior party leaders
Demands answers from LG office over unwarranted assault
Srinagar, 14 July: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference has come out against what it calls the “brazen manhandling” of Party Vice President and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah by police personnel while he was on his way to pay homage at Mazar-e-Shohada.
JKNC General Secretary Ali Muhammad Sagar, Additional General Secretaries Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, Ajay Sadhotra, Qamar Ali Akhoon, Treasurer Shammi Oberoi, Advisor to HCM Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq, Provincial Presidents Showkat Mir and Rattan Lal Gupta, along with party legislators, YNC, women’s wing, and zonal leaders, termed the police action a “shocking insult to democratic dignity.”
“There were restrictions yesterday, not today. So, under what law was the CM shoved and pushed?” the party leaders asked, calling the incident an “assault on democracy.”
The NC leaders have demanded an immediate explanation from the Lieutenant Governor’s office, questioning the legal and moral grounds of the police action.
“This is not just about Omar Abdullah. This is about what kind of democracy we’re becoming, where even an elected CM is treated with such contempt. If this is the respect for elected representatives, what hope is left for the common man?”
The party warned that such repeated infringements on constitutional rights and civil liberties risk setting dangerous precedents. “This isn’t law and order; this is lawlessness in uniform,” they added.
