PM Modi Says Northeast Overcame ‘Vote Bank’ Politics, Emerging as India’s Growth Engine
Launches Rs 9,000-Crore Projects in Mizoram, Emphasizes Connectivity, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Progress
AIZAWL, Sep 13: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that the Northeast, which had long suffered due to “vote bank” politics, has now emerged as a major growth engine of India, thanks to the BJP-led government’s initiatives over the past 11 years.
Addressing a public rally virtually from Lengpui Airport near Aizawl due to heavy rains, Modi launched projects worth Rs 9,000 crore in Mizoram, including the historic Bairabi–Sairang railway line that integrates the state into the country’s railway network. The project, which overcomes challenging terrains, will connect Aizawl with major metropolises and is expected to revolutionize the lives of local residents.
Modi emphasized Mizoram’s strategic role in the Centre’s ‘Act East’ policy, noting that projects like the Kaladan multimodal transit and railway lines will strengthen connectivity with Southeast Asia. “Enhanced connectivity will bolster educational, cultural, and economic ties across the Northeast, generate employment, and boost tourism. Those neglected before are now at the forefront,” he said.
The Prime Minister highlighted the region’s growing contribution to sports, entrepreneurship, and the national economy. Mizoram has become a hub for startups, with 4,500 ventures and 25 incubators operating in the state. He also lauded the new GST reforms for lowering taxes on medicines, vehicles, and essential goods, making life easier for the public.
Modi pointed out that India’s economy grew 7.8% in the first quarter of the 2025-26 financial year, the fastest among major global economies. He also praised the country’s armed forces for their success in Operation Sindoor, noting that indigenously made weapons played a key role in counter-terror operations.
