Oral Health Often Overlooked, Yet Vital in Preventing Systemic Diseases: Itoo
Oral Health Awareness Drive Launched in Srinagar, Minister Sakeena Itoo Stresses Link Between Dental Hygiene and Systemic Diseases
SRINAGAR, Sep 15: Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, today inaugurated a four-day “Oral Health Awareness Programme Bright Smiles, Happy Lives” at Government Dental College (GDC), Srinagar. The programme, organised by the Department of Public Health Dentistry, aims to promote preventive dental care and highlight the crucial connection between oral hygiene and general health.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Minister underlined that oral health is often neglected but plays a vital role in preventing systemic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and respiratory infections. “Oral health is not just about a bright smile; it is integral to the overall health of every citizen,” she said.
Itoo urged people, especially the youth, to adopt regular oral hygiene practices and make dental check-ups an essential part of their healthcare routine. She also stressed the government’s commitment under Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s leadership to strengthen medical infrastructure across J&K, citing new dialysis units at Sub-District Hospitals, MRI and CT scan facilities, and advanced healthcare services in GMCs and hospitals.
Calling for outreach to rural and far-flung areas, the Minister directed GDC Srinagar to conduct oral health camps to spread awareness among underserved communities. “Being a doctor is not just about wearing a white apron but about staying committed to the welfare of the masses with the motto of ‘Equal Treatment for All,’” she added.
In her welcome address, Dr. Sandeep Kour Bali, Principal of GDC Srinagar, said the programme is designed to engage students, healthcare professionals, and the general public. The initiative aims to bridge knowledge gaps about oral diseases, prevention, and treatment options while showcasing the services offered by the Dental College.
On the sidelines, the Minister flagged off a Dental Awareness Rally, featuring interactive sessions, demonstrations of brushing techniques, workshops, and distribution of educational material on oral hygiene. Later, she also inaugurated the Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MDRU) at the GDC Central Library.
