Andhra Pradesh Uses Drones to Speed Up Medical Services in Tribal Areas
More than 2,200 diagnostic samples have already been transported by unmanned aerial vehicles, helping connect remote communities with healthcare services.
AMARAVATI, Aug. 31: Andhra Pradesh has expanded the use of drones to transport medical diagnostic samples from remote tribal areas, helping healthcare workers overcome difficult terrain and reduce delays in testing.
The drone based initiative has so far facilitated the movement of more than 2,200 diagnostic samples, according to Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav.
The system is being used to support healthcare delivery in tribal hamlets where conventional transportation can make the movement of samples time consuming. Faster transportation allows diagnostic material to reach laboratories more efficiently and can help healthcare teams receive test results sooner.
The programme is also being used in screening efforts, including for sickle cell disease, giving health workers an additional logistical option for reaching communities in geographically challenging areas.
The initiative is not limited to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. More than 25 local tribal youths have been trained to assist with ground operations and drone-related logistics, creating employment opportunities while building local capacity for the technology.
Officials believe the model could help strengthen healthcare connectivity in remote locations where road-based transport is affected by distance, terrain or limited infrastructure.
The use of drones for medical logistics reflects the growing role of technology in extending essential health services beyond major towns and cities. By reducing the time required to move diagnostic samples, such systems could support earlier detection and more timely medical intervention for patients in underserved communities.
