Delhi’s Air Quality Stays ‘Very Poor’ as City Sees Season’s Coldest Day

AQI touches 356, several monitoring stations slip into ‘severe’ category

New Delhi, Nov 17: Delhi recorded ‘very poor’ air quality on Monday with an overall Air Quality Index (AQI) of 356, even as the national capital logged its lowest minimum temperature of the season at 8.7 degrees Celsius, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Data from the CPCB’s Sameer app showed that five monitoring stations reported air quality in the ‘severe’ category, while 29 stations fell under the ‘very poor’ bracket with AQI levels between 300 and 400. Another four stations recorded air quality in the ‘poor’ range.

Among the 38 AQI monitoring points across the city, Bawana reported the highest pollution level with an AQI of 419. Other areas in the ‘severe’ category included Narela (405), Jahangirpuri (404), Wazirpur (402) and Rohini (401).

As per CPCB standards, an AQI of 0–50 is classified as ‘good’, 51–100 ‘satisfactory’, 101–200 ‘moderate’, 201–300 ‘poor’, 301–400 ‘very poor’ and 401–500 ‘severe’.

According to the IMD, Monday’s minimum temperature of 8.7°C was 3.6 degrees below normal, with humidity touching 92% at 8:30 am. The maximum temperature is expected to hover around 26°C under clear skies.

The previous lowest November minimum in recent years was 7.3°C on November 29, 2022. In 2023, the lowest was 9.2°C, and in 2024, 9.5°C.
