Delhi Cabinet Approves Major District Reorganisation, Expands 11 Districts to 13
Reorganisation aims to align districts with municipal zones, streamline services, and improve citizen access.
New Delhi, Dec 12 : The Delhi government has approved a major administrative overhaul, increasing the city’s revenue districts from 11 to 13 to enhance coordination, speed up public service delivery, and ensure better governance.
Under the new plan, the districts will now be co-terminus with the 12 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) zones, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), and the Delhi Cantonment Board, bringing uniformity across administrative boundaries. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta described the move as “historic,” emphasizing that smaller, balanced, and empowered districts are essential for efficient monitoring, faster grievance redressal, and improved service delivery in a metropolis like Delhi.
The revamp includes the creation of three new districts—Outer North, Central North, and Old Delhi—while Shahdara district has been split and its areas redistributed into Northeast and East districts. The number of sub-divisions will increase from 33 to 39, and sub-registrar offices from 22 to 39, ensuring citizens can access multiple services, including revenue and property registration, from mini secretariats at district centers.
Officials highlighted that the previous misalignment between revenue districts and municipal zones had caused delays in land record management, civic services, and other public functions. The government plans to issue the gazette notification within 15 days and operationalise the new districts by the end of this month.
This reorganisation is expected to simplify governance, enhance transparency, and make administration more responsive to the needs of Delhi residents.
