Himachal Pradesh Battles Unusually Dry December, Shimla Celebrations Lack Snow
Cotton snow replaces real flakes as Shimla awaits first snowfall amid record dry spell
SHIMLA, Dec 23: Himachal Pradesh is experiencing an unusually dry winter this December, recording a 100 per cent rainfall deficit so far. With natural snowfall yet to arrive, organisers of the Shimla Winter Carnival have resorted to using cotton snow to attract tourists to the hill station.
Now in its third edition, the week-long Winter Carnival, scheduled from December 24 to 31, is organised by the Shimla Municipal Corporation. The festival celebrates music, art, and culture, while also promoting social awareness initiatives such as anti-drug campaigns.
Global climate change has made Himachal’s winter season increasingly unpredictable, with snowfall delayed and rainfall scarce. Meteorological data shows large parts of the state have received no measurable rain or snow during what is typically the peak winter period, pushing December toward becoming one of the driest on record.
While higher-altitude areas like Lahaul and Spiti have seen light snowfall, popular tourist destinations including Shimla, Kufri, and Manali remain snowless. Lahaul Spiti recorded the lowest minimum temperature on Monday at minus 3.1°C.
Weather forecasts indicate that clear skies and dry conditions will persist through the coming week. Despite the absence of natural snow, tourist footfall continues strong during the holiday season, keeping the spirit of the carnival alive.
