Dense Fog Hits Delhi Airport: 118 Flights Cancelled, 16 Diverted
Low visibility affects flight operations at IGIA; authorities urge airlines to follow passenger facilitation norms
New Delhi, Dec 30: Dense fog disrupted operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on Tuesday, leading to the cancellation of 118 flights, diversion of 16 flights, and delays for 130 services, airport authorities said.
IGIA, operated by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), handles around 1,300 daily flights. Of the cancellations, 60 were arrivals and 58 departures. Flight tracking data from Flightradar24.com indicated an average departure delay of 28 minutes.
In a statement on X, DIAL clarified that all flight operations continue, but flights not equipped with CAT III landing systems, which allow operations in low visibility, may be affected.
The Civil Aviation Ministry directed airlines to strictly adhere to passenger facilitation guidelines amid the fog. These include providing timely flight information, meals for delayed passengers, rebooking or refunds in case of cancellations, ensuring no denial of boarding after on time check in, smooth baggage handling, and prompt grievance redressal.
Passengers are advised to stay in close contact with airlines for the latest updates and plan for additional time at the airport.
