PM Modi to Host German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Ahmedabad as India Visit Begins Jan 12
First official India trip for Merz to focus on strategic partnership, economic ties, and cultural engagements in Gujarat
NEW DELHI / AHMEDABAD, Jan 06 : German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will embark on a two-day official visit to India starting January 12, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks Merz’s first official trip to India since taking office, with the Prime Minister scheduled to receive him in Ahmedabad on the opening day.
Visit coincides with major Gujarat events
The timing of the visit coincides with significant economic and cultural events in Gujarat. On January 11, PM Modi will inaugurate the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Rajkot, aimed at boosting investment in Saurashtra and Kutch.
During Merz’s visit, Gujarat will also host the International Kite Festival, while PM Modi is expected to attend related events in Ahmedabad and visit the International Flower Show 2026 at the Sabarmati riverfront. Officials note that the convergence of diplomatic, business, and cultural engagements adds strategic weight to the visit.
Focus on strategic partnership and economic cooperation
The India–Germany Strategic Partnership, which completed 25 years last year, will be a key focus. During discussions, PM Modi and Chancellor Merz are expected to review progress in areas including technology cooperation, education, skilling, trade, investment, mobility, science, defence, security, innovation, and green development.
Both leaders will also meet business and industry representatives, with regional and global issues likely to feature in the agenda.
This visit follows regular high-level exchanges between India and Germany. Modi and Merz last met at the G7 Summit in Canada, where the Indian Prime Minister extended an official invitation. The German Chancellor will also travel to Bengaluru, ahead of the India–EU Summit scheduled for January 27.
