Iran Calls on UN to Censure US Over Trump’s Protest Remarks and Tariff Threats
Tehran accuses Washington of inciting unrest and interfering in internal affairs amid rising diplomatic tensions
Iran, Jan 14 : Iran has urged the United Nations to formally censure the United States, accusing it of encouraging internal unrest and issuing coercive threats against Tehran following recent remarks and policy decisions by US President Donald Trump.
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and the current President of the UN Security Council, Iranian Ambassador to the UN Amir Saeid Iravani said Washington had “crossed a clear line” by openly interfering in Iran’s domestic affairs. The letter was also sent to Somali diplomat Abukar Dahir Osman, who is presiding over the Security Council this month.
The appeal comes amid escalating tensions after Trump announced new trade penalties against Iran and publicly called on Iranian protesters to intensify demonstrations. Iran argued that such statements undermine its sovereignty and pose serious risks to regional peace and stability.
Referring to a post by Trump on his Truth Social platform, Iravani accused the US President of “openly inciting violence” within Iran. In the message, Trump directly addressed demonstrators, urging them to continue protests and “take over” institutions, while claiming that external support was forthcoming.
The diplomatic standoff has been further fuelled by Trump’s decision to cancel all engagements with Iranian officials. Speaking at the Detroit Economic Club, he said the move was prompted by reports of violence against protesters in Iran, adding that even a single death was unacceptable.
Earlier, Trump announced that countries engaging in trade with Iran would face a 25 per cent tariff on their exports to the United States. He also encouraged protesters to document alleged abuses and identify those responsible.
While the White House reiterated that diplomacy remains its preferred approach, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that other options, including military measures, had not been ruled out.
Iran has maintained that the US actions amount to political pressure and unlawful interference, and has called on the United Nations to take a firm stand to uphold international law and the principles of state sovereignty.
