WPL 2026: ‘She’s a Legend,’ Says Rodrigues as Kapp Powers Delhi Capitals to Victory

Rodrigues’ half-century and Kapp’s match defining Powerplay spell power Delhi to second win of the season

India, Jan 21 : Delhi Capitals captain Jemimah Rodrigues credited Marizanne Kapp’s exceptional Powerplay bowling for setting up her side’s victory over Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026, after leading the chase with a commanding half-century.

Delhi laid the foundation with the ball as Kapp delivered a near perfect opening spell, conceding just eight runs in her four overs and bowling 16 dot balls without giving away a single boundary. Her discipline, combined with support from Nandani Sharma, reduced Mumbai to 23 for 2 in the Powerplay, with early wickets of Sajana and Hayley Matthews.

“Today was a very important game for us. I want to share this award with Kappy,” Rodrigues said after the match. “The way she bowled in the Powerplay got us into the game. It was one of the best spells she has ever bowled. She is a legend of the game, but she still wants to become better.”

Mumbai struggled to accelerate despite a recovery led by Nat Sciver-Brunt and captain Harmanpreet Kaur. Sciver Brunt remained unbeaten on 65 off 45 balls, while Kaur scored 41, the pair adding 78 runs to guide Mumbai to a competitive but below par total of 154 for 5.

For Delhi, N Sree Charani was the standout bowler in the middle and death overs, finishing with figures of 3 for 33, including two wickets in the 18th over. Kapp chipped in with one wicket to cap off her economical spell.

In reply, Delhi got off to a steady start through Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma before Rodrigues anchored the chase with 51 off 37 deliveries. She also shared a crucial 31-run partnership with Kapp, built largely through sharp running between the wickets.

Rodrigues said adapting early was key on a challenging surface. “I have been told to take a little time initially. Once you get through the first 10 balls on pitches like this, batting becomes much easier,” she explained.

The Delhi skipper added that anything under 160 was always within reach, provided partnerships were formed, and said she drew inspiration from the way Sciver-Brunt and Kaur rebuilt Mumbai’s innings.

“We knew anything under 160 was a fighting score, but partnerships were crucial. I learnt a lot from the way Nat and Harmanpreet played today,” Rodrigues said.

The win marked Delhi Capitals’ second victory of the WPL 2026 season, strengthening their early campaign.
