Priyanka Gandhi Urges PM Modi to Raise Gaza ‘Genocide’ Issue in Knesset Address During Israel Visit

Congress leader urges India to uphold moral stance as Prime Minister begins two-day Israel visit

New Delhi, Feb 25: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak about the situation in Gaza while addressing Israel’s Parliament during his ongoing visit to the country.

In a post on X, the Wayanad MP said she hoped the Prime Minister would highlight what she described as the “genocide” of civilians in Gaza and seek justice for victims. She stressed that India has historically stood for truth, peace and moral responsibility in global affairs and should continue to do so.

Prime Minister Modi departed for Israel on a two-day state visit at the invitation of his Israeli counterpart. The trip marks his second visit to the country, following his landmark 2017 tour  the first by an Indian Prime Minister. The current visit comes months after a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas under the “Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict.”

During the visit, Modi is scheduled to hold talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to review progress in the India-Israel Strategic Partnership. Discussions are expected to cover cooperation in science and technology, innovation, defence and security, agriculture, water management, trade and economic ties, along with people to people exchanges. He will also call on Israeli President Isaac Herzog and address the Knesset.

Priyanka Gandhi has consistently voiced strong views on the Gaza conflict. In the past, she publicly accused Israel of committing genocide and displayed symbols of solidarity with Palestine in Parliament. Last year, a United Nations Commission of Inquiry report stated there were reasonable grounds to examine whether certain acts in Gaza could fall under the definition of genocide under international law.

India formally recognised the State of Palestine in 1988 and has traditionally supported a two-state solution while maintaining strategic ties with Israel. In recent months, New Delhi joined several nations in expressing concern over developments in the West Bank.

Although large scale hostilities have paused under the ceasefire arrangement, Gaza continues to face severe humanitarian challenges, including shortages of food, medicine and shelter, according to international reports. Core political and security issues remain unresolved.

The Prime Minister’s address to the Knesset is expected to focus on bilateral cooperation and broader regional developments.
