Iran Claims Missile Strike on Kurdish Militant Headquarters in Iraqi Kurdistan: IRNA

Tehran claims operation was aimed at groups opposing the Iranian government amid rising regional tensions.

Iran, Mar 05 : Iran on Thursday said it carried out a missile strike targeting the headquarters of Kurdish militant groups in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan region, according to reports by Iranian state media.

The strike was aimed at organisations that Tehran describes as armed groups opposing the Iranian government. A military statement cited by the official IRNA news agency said the attack involved three missiles directed at positions in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The report, shared through IRNA’s Telegram channel, stated that the operation specifically targeted bases belonging to Kurdish groups accused by Iran of carrying out activities against the country’s political system.

The development comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with reports of military activity in Kurdish areas spanning both Iran and neighbouring Iraq. Kurdish militant groups have long operated along the mountainous border between the two countries, an area that has frequently witnessed crossborder security incidents.

Iran has repeatedly accused these groups of launching attacks and supporting unrest inside its territory, allegations that have often prompted military responses across the border.

Authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan have not immediately commented on the reported missile strike. The incident adds to growing concerns over stability in the border region as geopolitical tensions continue to escalate.
