India-Iran Talks Showing Results, Says Jaishankar After Tankers Clear Strait of Hormuz

External Affairs Minister highlights diplomatic coordination with Tehran as key to safeguarding India’s maritime energy routes.

New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said that sustained diplomatic communication with Iran is proving effective in facilitating safe transit for Indian vessels through the strategic Strait of Hormuz amid heightened tensions in the Middle East.

In an interview with the Financial Times, the minister noted that India has been actively coordinating with Tehran to ensure uninterrupted maritime movement through the narrow channel, which carries nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil trade.

The comments come at a time when instability in the region has raised concerns over global energy supply chains and the security of vital shipping lanes.

Talks With Tehran Showing Progress

Jaishankar said the ongoing dialogue between the two countries has begun producing positive outcomes, with Indian authorities maintaining close contact with their counterparts in Tehran.

He emphasised that maintaining communication and cooperation is a more practical approach to resolving maritime concerns than distancing from the situation.

Diplomacy Key to Protecting Energy Interests

According to the minister, India’s broader strategy focuses on consistent diplomatic engagement with regional partners to protect its economic and energy interests.

As an example, he pointed to the recent passage of two Indian-flagged tankers — Shivalik and Nanda Devi — through the waterway.

The vessels are carrying approximately 92,712 metric tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas and are heading toward India’s western ports, including Mundra Port and Kandla Port.

Transit Clearances Handled Individually

Despite the successful movement of the tankers, Jaishankar clarified that there is no comprehensive arrangement guaranteeing passage for all Indian ships.

Instead, clearances for navigation are currently being granted individually, with each vessel’s movement coordinated through ongoing diplomatic channels.
