PM Modi Accuses Opposition of ‘Disrespecting’ Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla
Prime Minister says democratic debate must not cross into disregard for parliamentary institutions.
New Delhi, Mar 16: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has criticised the Opposition for what he described as disrespect towards Om Birla, stating that political disagreement should not undermine the dignity of democratic institutions.
In a letter addressed to the Lok Sabha Speaker on Sunday, Modi highlighted the importance of parliamentary traditions and stressed that there is a clear difference between disagreement and disrespect in a democracy.
The Prime Minister’s remarks came days after an Opposition-sponsored no-confidence motion against Birla was defeated in the Lower House. Referring to the move, Modi said certain individuals with a “dynastic and feudal mindset” attempt to confine democratic institutions within narrow political interests.
He said such attitudes make it difficult for some leaders to accept the rise of new public representatives, particularly younger Members of Parliament, and added that democracy thrives when equal opportunities are given to all voices in the House.
According to Modi, many citizens who value democratic ideals felt that personal interests and political arrogance were behind the no-confidence motion brought against the Speaker. He also noted that this was not the first instance in which the chair had faced such challenges.
Emphasising the principles of parliamentary democracy, the Prime Minister said differences of opinion are natural and even essential in a democratic system. However, he warned that political rivalry should not turn into disregard for parliamentary decorum.
He praised Birla’s handling of difficult situations in the House, noting that the restraint, composure and impartiality shown by the Speaker during heated debates reflected a commitment to upholding institutional dignity.
Modi also welcomed Birla’s statement that no member of the House stands above parliamentary rules, describing it as a reaffirmation of the core values of India’s democratic framework.
The Prime Minister further said the strength of India’s democracy lies in its constitutional institutions, with Parliament serving as the central platform for debate, discussion and accountability.
He noted that the role of the Speaker extends beyond managing proceedings and includes safeguarding parliamentary traditions, rules and institutional integrity.
Highlighting the importance of inclusive dialogue, Modi said the essence of Parliament lies in reasoned debate and deliberation where every viewpoint is given space. He commended Birla for ensuring that a large number of lawmakers are given opportunities to speak in the House.
Concluding his message, Modi expressed confidence that Birla would continue to conduct the proceedings of the Lok Sabha with fairness, patience and dedication, and emphasised that it is the collective responsibility of all leaders to strengthen the country’s democratic institutions.
