PM Modi Bids Farewell to Retiring RS Members, Lists Key Outgoing MPs
Prime Minister praises veteran leaders, urges outgoing MPs to continue public service beyond tenure
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday delivered a farewell address in the Rajya Sabha for members completing their terms, describing the moment as emotional and reflective of the House’s collective spirit.
He said such occasions transcend political differences, bringing members together in respect for colleagues moving on to new responsibilities. Emphasising continuity in public life, the Prime Minister remarked that political journeys do not end with a tenure and that experience gained in Parliament remains valuable for the nation.
During his address, Modi lauded senior leaders including H. D. Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge and Sharad Pawar for their long-standing contributions, noting that their dedication and discipline serve as an example for younger parliamentarians.
A total of 37 members from multiple states are set to retire in the current cycle, representing regions such as Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Telangana and Himachal Pradesh. The outgoing MPs include prominent names like Ramdas Athawale, Priyanka Chaturvedi and Abhishek Manu Singhvi, among others.
The biennial elections to the Upper House recently saw polling for select seats, while several members were elected unopposed. The results strengthened the position of the National Democratic Alliance in key states, particularly Bihar and Odisha.
Highlighting the importance of parliamentary functioning, the Prime Minister noted that debates, discussions and diverse experiences within the House contribute significantly to democratic decision-making and governance.
