PM Narendra Modi Becomes India’s Longest Serving Head of Government

Historic milestone marks over two decades of uninterrupted leadership from Gujarat to the Centre

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the longest-serving head of government in India, achieving the milestone after completing over 24 years in continuous office, including his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and later as Prime Minister.

The record was previously held by Pawan Kumar Chamling, who served for 8,930 days between December 1994 and May 2019. Officials confirmed that Modi crossed this benchmark in his 25th year in executive office, a journey that began in October 2001 when he assumed charge as Gujarat CM.

Modi is also among the few leaders in Indian political history to secure three consecutive Lok Sabha victories, joining Jawaharlal Nehru in achieving this feat.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the milestone as a testament to unwavering public trust and dedicated governance. He credited Modi’s leadership with transforming India across sectors, highlighting his focus on development, welfare initiatives, and enhancing the country’s global stature.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised Modi’s lifelong commitment to public service, noting his consistent dedication from his tenure in Gujarat to leading the nation.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu termed the achievement extraordinary, emphasizing Modi’s vision for a developed India by 2047 and his role in shaping the country’s growth trajectory.

The milestone underscores a rare continuity in leadership, reflecting sustained electoral success and enduring political influence at both state and national levels.
