IOC Lifts Restrictions on Belarus Athletes Ahead of Olympic Qualification Events

Ukraine Strongly Criticizes IOC Decision

Ukraine, May 08 : The International Olympic Committee announced the removal of restrictions on Belarusian athletes, allowing them to compete internationally under their national flag and anthem once again.

The decision marks a major shift in international sports policy after sanctions were introduced in 2022 following Belarus’s support for Russia during the Ukraine conflict. The IOC said Belarusian competitors would now be eligible to participate fully in qualification events for future international tournaments, including the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Officials in Belarus welcomed the announcement and described it as a victory for athletes who had been excluded from competition for political reasons.

However, the move immediately sparked criticism from Ukraine, whose government argued that Belarus continues to support military operations connected to the war.

While the IOC lifted its restrictions, several sports organizations have maintained their own bans. World Athletics confirmed that Belarusian and Russian athletes would still not be allowed to participate in its competitions until meaningful progress toward peace is achieved.

The decision reignited global debate about whether sports organizations should separate athletics from international politics. Supporters of the IOC ruling argued athletes should not be punished for government policies, while critics insisted sporting participation carries symbolic political importance.

Olympic analysts believe the policy change could influence decisions made by other international federations over the coming months.

The IOC also confirmed it is continuing to review the status of Russian sporting authorities separately because of ongoing investigations and geopolitical concerns related to occupied Ukrainian territories.
