Israel Intercepts Gaza-Bound Aid Flotilla in Mediterranean
Humanitarian Mission Sparks International Reaction
JERUSALEM, May 20: Israeli naval forces intercepted a flotilla of humanitarian ships attempting to reach Gaza through the Mediterranean Sea, triggering strong reactions from several international groups.
The convoy, consisting of more than 50 vessels, departed from Türkiye carrying humanitarian aid intended for Palestinian civilians facing severe shortages of food, medicine and essential supplies.
Israeli authorities stated that the naval blockade was necessary for security reasons and accused some groups within the flotilla of attempting to provoke confrontation. Activist organisations, however, condemned the interception and described it as a violation of humanitarian principles.
Several world leaders and international rights organisations called for restraint and urged both sides to avoid further escalation. Demonstrations supporting the aid mission were reported in parts of Europe and the Middle East.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to attract global attention as aid agencies warn about worsening living conditions, displacement and infrastructure damage caused by ongoing conflict.
Diplomatic observers fear the incident could further strain regional relations and complicate ceasefire discussions currently being pursued by international mediators.
