US-Iran Talks Advance After Tehran Accepts Uranium Move Proposal

Regional mediation efforts intensify as Washington and Tehran move closer to a possible peace framework while key disputes over nuclear policy and sanctions remain unresolved.

Iran, May 24 : US-Iran peace talks appeared to gain fresh momentum over the weekend as diplomatic engagement increased across the region, raising cautious hopes of a possible breakthrough in long running tensions between Washington and Tehran.

US President Donald Trump said negotiations involving multiple regional leaders had advanced significantly, claiming that a broader “Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to PEACE” had been largely finalised. According to Trump, only a few remaining issues are yet to be settled before an official announcement can be made.

The proposed framework is believed to include measures aimed at reducing military tensions and restoring stability in key strategic areas. Trump also suggested that discussions covered the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping routes. However, Iranian media rejected reports that Tehran would surrender control or strategic influence over the waterway.

Diplomatic activity surrounding the negotiations has also highlighted Pakistan’s growing mediating role in the process. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism that Islamabad could soon host another round of high level discussions aimed at narrowing remaining differences between the two sides.

Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam, described the latest developments with “conservative optimism” and praised Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement in facilitating dialogue during a sensitive period in the region.

Despite visible progress, several contentious issues continue to challenge the negotiations. Differences remain over Iran’s nuclear programme, the future of US sanctions and wider regional security arrangements. Diplomatic sources indicated that both sides are still attempting to bridge gaps on enforcement mechanisms and long-term commitments.

At the same time, reports suggested Washington may reconsider military options if negotiations fail to produce a durable agreement, underscoring the fragile nature of the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The latest round of engagement comes at a critical moment for regional stability, with global powers closely monitoring whether the renewed diplomatic push can prevent another escalation in the Middle East.
