LG Sinha Says J&K Building Strong Hockey Pipeline to Produce National Champions

At Alfa Hockey Inter-School Tournament finale, Lieutenant Governor highlights efforts to identify young players and strengthen the sport's ecosystem across the Union Territory.

SRINAGAR, Jun 11: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to promoting hockey in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that sustained efforts are underway to build a strong foundation for the sport by identifying and nurturing emerging talent from the grassroots level.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the Alfa Hockey Inter School Tournament 2026 at the Synthetic Hockey Astro Turf in Srinagar’s Polo Ground, Sinha said the Sports Department and the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council are working in a coordinated manner to create opportunities for aspiring players and strengthen the sporting ecosystem in the Union Territory.

He described the inter-school championship as a significant initiative that provides young athletes with a competitive platform to showcase their abilities while helping sports authorities spot promising talent for future development.

The Lieutenant Governor observed that sporting excellence can only be achieved when players are given access to quality infrastructure, professional guidance and regular competitive exposure. He noted that many talented youngsters often come from modest backgrounds and require institutional support to realise their full potential.

According to Sinha, the tournament has emerged as an effective mechanism for discovering gifted players and encouraging them to pursue the sport seriously. He said the performances witnessed during the competition reflected the vast reservoir of talent available among the youth of Jammu and Kashmir.

Highlighting the determination and resilience of young sportspersons, he said the region’s youth have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to excel when provided with suitable opportunities. Their commitment and hard work, he added, are key factors that can help them achieve success at higher levels of competition.

Sinha urged participants to remain focused on continuous improvement and make the most of the expertise offered by their coaches. He emphasised that constructive guidance plays a crucial role in helping athletes overcome weaknesses and refine their skills.

Encouraging a culture of learning and discipline, he advised players to draw inspiration from accomplished sportspersons and study their journeys to understand the values of perseverance, dedication and professionalism.

The Lieutenant Governor also underscored the broader significance of sports in shaping responsible and confident citizens. He said participation in games not only contributes to physical fitness and mental strength but also instils qualities such as teamwork, leadership and discipline that are essential for nation-building.

Reiterating the administration’s focus on youth empowerment through sports, Sinha expressed confidence that hockey has the potential to become a major avenue of opportunity for young people in the Union Territory. He said ongoing investments in infrastructure, training facilities and talent development programmes would help create a stronger sporting culture in the years ahead.

He voiced optimism that Jammu and Kashmir would produce a new generation of accomplished hockey players capable of representing the region and the country at national and international levels.

Concluding his address, the Lieutenant Governor said initiatives such as the Alfa Hockey Inter-School Tournament are laying the groundwork for the future growth of the sport and will play an important role in shaping the next generation of hockey talent from Jammu and Kashmir.
