New Delhi, July 26 : The World Health Organization (WHO) has renewed its warning over the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), saying drug-resistant infections are becoming one of the biggest challenges facing global healthcare systems. Health experts have urged governments to strengthen surveillance, improve infection prevention and encourage responsible use of antibiotics to slow the spread of resistant bacteria.
The warning comes as several countries reported increasing cases of infections that no longer respond to commonly prescribed antibiotics. Medical professionals fear that routine illnesses and surgical procedures could become significantly more dangerous if current trends continue.
Drug Resistance Becoming a Major Public Health Threat
Antimicrobial resistance occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites evolve to withstand medicines designed to eliminate them. As resistance increases, infections become harder to treat, resulting in longer hospital stays, higher healthcare costs and greater risk of death.
