Hospitals Expand Heat-Related Illness Clinics Amid Rising Climate Health Concerns
Medical institutions strengthen emergency preparedness and public health advisory systems to tackle increasing cases of heat-related complications.
New Delhi, July 26: Hospitals across several Indian states are strengthening specialised facilities for the diagnosis and treatment of heat-related illnesses as climate experts warn of increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves affecting public health.
Leading government and private healthcare institutions have expanded dedicated outpatient services to manage dehydration, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, and other weather related medical emergencies. Health authorities said the initiative is part of broader efforts to improve preparedness for climate-driven health risks.
Doctors reported that prolonged exposure to high temperatures can significantly affect elderly individuals, children, outdoor workers, and people with chronic illnesses. Medical professionals have urged citizens to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure during peak afternoon hours, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, or high body temperature appear.
Hospitals have also increased the availability of cooling equipment, emergency medicines, and trained medical staff to respond quickly during periods of extreme weather. Ambulance services and emergency departments have been advised to remain on alert during heatwave conditions.
Public health experts stressed that climate change is increasingly influencing disease patterns and placing additional pressure on healthcare systems. They called for stronger coordination between weather agencies and health departments to issue timely advisories before extreme temperature events.
The Health Ministry has encouraged state governments to continue awareness campaigns promoting preventive measures, especially in urban areas where heat stress tends to be more severe due to rising temperatures and dense infrastructure.
Healthcare professionals believe that strengthening climate resilient health systems will play a vital role in reducing illness and preventing avoidable deaths during future heatwaves, while improving overall emergency preparedness across the country.
