Congress, GFP Kick Off Alliance Talks Ahead of 2027 Goa Assembly Elections
AAP also signals openness to a united opposition front as parties begin early discussions to challenge the BJP in the next Goa polls.
Goa, Aug 03 : The Congress and the Goa Forward Party (GFP) have initiated discussions to explore the possibility of joining forces for the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, signalling the beginning of early efforts to strengthen the opposition in the coastal state. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also indicated its readiness to collaborate with parties sharing a common political objective.
Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar confirmed that he recently met GFP chief Vijai Sardesai in South Goa’s Fatorda to discuss the prospects of reviving their electoral partnership. According to Chodankar, the meeting was an initial round of discussions aimed at assessing the feasibility of contesting the next Assembly election together.
He stated that additional meetings would be held to work out crucial aspects of the proposed alliance, including seat-sharing arrangements and a broader electoral strategy before a final decision is taken.
The Congress and GFP had previously contested the 2022 Goa Assembly elections as allies. Their renewed engagement suggests that both parties are considering a united approach to improve the opposition’s electoral prospects in 2027.
Meanwhile, the Aam Aadmi Party has also begun internal consultations on potential pre-poll alliances. Goa AAP president Valmiki Naik chaired a meeting with a party committee tasked with evaluating tie-up options with like minded political groups.
Speaking to the media, Naik said the party remains open to forming alliances if they help build a stronger challenge against the BJP government in the state. He emphasised that defeating the ruling dispensation would be the common objective of any such collaboration.
Goa is expected to vote for its 40-member Legislative Assembly in February or March 2027. The BJP currently enjoys a comfortable majority in the House with the backing of 33 legislators. Of these, 28 belong to the BJP, while the remaining support comes from three Independent MLAs and two members of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP).
In the 2022 Assembly elections, the BJP secured 20 seats before expanding its strength through the induction of eight Congress legislators into the party. The Congress now holds three seats in the Assembly, while the AAP has two MLAs. The GFP and the Revolutionary Goans Party (RGP) each have one legislator.
The BJP has already set an ambitious target of winning at least 30 seats in the next Assembly election, aiming to retain power in Goa for a fourth consecutive term. With opposition parties beginning conversations well ahead of the polls, the political landscape in the state is expected to witness increased alliance building efforts over the coming months.
