India Records Historic Rise in Organ Transplants as Aadhaar Linked Pledges Cross Five Lakh
Government data highlights record transplant procedures and growing public participation in organ donation through digital verification.
New Delhi, Aug 05 : India has achieved its highest ever annual organ transplant count, reflecting significant progress in the country’s healthcare infrastructure and organ donation ecosystem. Official figures released by the Union Health Ministry show that 20,138 organ transplants were performed during 2025, marking a new national milestone.
The achievement has been supported by growing public awareness campaigns, improved hospital networks, and enhanced coordination among transplant centres across the country. Authorities also reported that more than five lakh citizens have registered organ donation pledges using Aadhaar-based digital verification, making the process faster and more transparent.
Health experts attribute the steady increase to stronger implementation of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) framework, better identification of potential donors, and improved transport systems for harvested organs. The expansion of transplant facilities beyond major metropolitan cities has also enabled greater access for patients awaiting life-saving procedures.
Officials said kidney transplants continued to account for the largest share of surgeries, followed by liver, heart, lung and pancreas transplants. Both living and deceased donor programmes witnessed encouraging growth during the year.
The government has been promoting awareness campaigns to dispel myths surrounding organ donation while encouraging hospitals to strengthen counselling services for donor families. Digital registration and Aadhaar authentication have further streamlined the pledge process, helping build a verified national donor database.
Medical professionals believe the record numbers demonstrate increasing public trust in the country’s transplant programme. However, they also stressed the need to reduce waiting times, expand specialised transplant centres, and improve post-operative care, particularly in underserved regions.
With demand for organs continuing to exceed supply, policymakers have reiterated their commitment to strengthening infrastructure, increasing public participation, and ensuring equitable access to transplant services across India.
