India Sets Ambitious AI and Semiconductor Roadmap, Plans Training for 1 Crore Youth

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address on August 15 outlined an ambitious technology roadmap for India, with artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and digital infrastructure emerging as key pillars of the country’s development strategy.
Modi announced plans to provide artificial intelligence training to one crore young people, signalling a major push to expand the country’s technology workforce and prepare students and professionals for an economy increasingly shaped by advanced digital tools.
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s efforts to strengthen its semiconductor ecosystem. He said the country is targeting the establishment of seven to eight semiconductor plants within the next one to two years, reflecting New Delhi’s broader strategy of reducing dependence on overseas chip supply chains and developing domestic manufacturing capabilities.
Modi linked the country’s technology ambitions to the expansion of computing infrastructure, data centres and electricity generation. He noted that the growing use of AI and the development of semiconductor and data-centre infrastructure would require a substantial increase in reliable power availability.
The technology push forms part of the government’s wider vision of building a self-reliant and globally competitive economy. Industry leaders have welcomed the emphasis on research, manufacturing and technological capability, arguing that sustained investment in innovation will be critical to India’s long-term growth.
The announcements come as India seeks to establish itself as a significant player across the global AI and semiconductor value chains. Alongside expanding domestic manufacturing, the government is focusing on developing skilled talent capable of working across emerging technologies.
The emphasis on AI education could also help address the growing demand for specialised skills as businesses increasingly adopt machine learning, automation and generative AI tools.
With semiconductor fabrication, AI training, computing capacity and energy infrastructure being pursued together, the government’s latest roadmap signals an effort to build the wider ecosystem required for India’s technology ambitions rather than focusing on a single sector.
