AI Boom Pushes Semiconductor Industry Towards Advanced Manufacturing

Global chipmakers are expanding advanced packaging and manufacturing capabilities as demand for processors supporting artificial intelligence continues to rise.

SINGAPORE, Aug 19: The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is reshaping semiconductor manufacturing, with chipmakers and equipment companies increasing their focus on advanced capacity, packaging and production technologies.

At SEMICON Taiwan 2026, industry leaders highlighted artificial intelligence as a major force behind the transformation of semiconductor manufacturing. Industry association SEMI said 300mm fab equipment spending is projected to exceed USD 150 billion in 2027, driven by demand for AI chips, advanced capacity and supply chain resilience.

The surge in AI applications has increased demand for high-performance processors and advanced memory technologies. This is putting greater pressure on manufacturers to expand production while improving the efficiency of chip packaging and testing.

Advanced packaging has become particularly important because modern AI systems require chips capable of handling large amounts of data at high speed. Companies are therefore investing in technologies that allow processors and memory components to work together more efficiently.

The trend is also creating opportunities for semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Hanmi Semiconductor, for example, announced on August 18 that it would acquire a manufacturing facility as it moves to expand bonding capacity amid strong demand linked to AI semiconductors.

The semiconductor sector’s expansion also highlights the growing importance of resilient supply chains. Governments and manufacturers are seeking to increase domestic and regional production capacity to reduce vulnerabilities in the global chip ecosystem.

With AI adoption spreading across cloud computing, robotics, autonomous systems and enterprise applications, demand for specialised computing hardware is expected to remain a major driver of semiconductor investment.
