India’s Envoy Kwatra Meets US Congressman Huizenga to Strengthen Bilateral Ties
India’s envoy highlights diversified energy supplies and expanding collaboration with Washington in defence, trade and technology.
WASHINGTON, Sep 2: Indian Ambassador to the United States Vinay Mohan Kwatra met Republican Congressman Bill Huizenga and discussed key developments shaping the India-US partnership, including energy security, defence, trade and technology.
Kwatra described the interaction with Huizenga, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on South and Central Asia of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, as a useful exchange.
During the meeting, the envoy briefed the Congressman on India’s efforts to diversify its energy supply sources and strengthen cooperation in the energy security sector. The two sides also exchanged views on regional developments and the broader direction of bilateral ties.
Kwatra said they discussed recent progress in India-US cooperation across defence, trade and technology, while also reviewing developments with implications for the strategic partnership.
The Indian envoy also acknowledged Huizenga’s contribution to bipartisan support for closer relations between the two countries in the US Congress.
Energy cooperation gains significance
Energy security has assumed greater importance amid disruptions to supplies from Gulf producers linked to the Iran conflict. Against this backdrop, the United States has become an increasingly important supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to India.
The discussions reflected New Delhi’s efforts to broaden its energy sourcing while maintaining deeper engagement with Washington across strategic and economic sectors.
The meeting also highlighted the growing role of congressional engagement in supporting the wider India-US relationship, particularly on issues involving regional security, energy and trade.
