OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Discuss Joint Efforts on AI Safety

Rival AI companies are exploring cooperation on safety measures as concerns grow over the rapid development of increasingly capable systems.

Washington, Sep 16 : OpenAI is working with Anthropic and Google DeepMind on discussions aimed at improving artificial intelligence safety, according to a report published this week.

The talks involve the three major AI developers exploring ways to coordinate on safety issues without requiring an antitrust waiver, according to Bloomberg News, which was cited by Reuters. OpenAI global policy chief Chris Lehane said the companies have been in discussions for several weeks.

The development comes as concerns over the risks associated with advanced AI systems have intensified. Technology leaders and researchers have recently debated whether the pace of development should be slowed and whether stronger safeguards are needed as AI capabilities continue to expand.

OpenAI has also expressed support for bipartisan legislation aimed at addressing potentially catastrophic AI risks, according to the report. The discussions indicate that competing companies may be seeking common approaches to managing emerging technological challenges.

The cooperation comes at a time when AI systems are being used for increasingly complex tasks, including software development, research and autonomous operations. Recent reports have also highlighted concerns about AI agents being used in cyber operations, adding urgency to discussions about security and oversight.

The companies have not publicly confirmed all details of the reported discussions, and Reuters said it could not independently verify the Bloomberg report.

As the technology advances, the question of how developers can establish effective safeguards while continuing innovation is becoming an increasingly important issue for the industry.
