‘Resident Evil’ Opens With Franchise-Best $60 Million in North America
Zach Cregger’s latest survival horror film delivers the strongest domestic opening in the long-running video game adaptation series
US, Sep 21 : The latest ‘Resident Evil’ movie has made a strong debut at the North American box office, collecting an estimated $60 million during its opening weekend.
Directed by Zach Cregger, the film earned the highest opening weekend in the franchise’s history, according to studio estimates reported on September 20. The movie was released across 3,684 theatres in the United States and Canada.
The new instalment stars Austin Abrams and follows a medical courier who becomes caught in a deadly outbreak in Raccoon City. The film combines survival horror with the action elements associated with the long-running video-game franchise.
Beyond North America, the movie added another $48.3 million from international markets, taking its worldwide opening to approximately $108.3 million.
The performance gives the series a significant theatrical boost, while early audience and critical responses have also drawn attention to Cregger’s take on the property.
