Drug dealers and peddlers now find Jammu City and its outskirts to be appealing and lucrative locations where they can conduct their business carelessly. Recently, these shady individuals have spread into rural areas as well. Even though police have intervened frequently, this horrible practice persists. A sizable number of young people, regardless of gender, have been seduced by the fatal poison that ultimately results in their destruction. The wealthy nations were initially impacted by this disease, but soon the third-world nations also fell victim. As a result, the situation has grown unmanageable and pandemic. The trend is quite concerning and Kashmir is not an exception. They will meet their end if they do not stop their sinful behaviour. Widespread drug usage and misuse have an impact on people’s health as well as the health of their families, neighbours, society, and the entire country. Nobody can ignore the fatal threat, which has emerged as a global societal issue and appears to be becoming worse with time. Drug use is now not only prevalent among the wealthy but also among other socioeconomic groups, including the poor. Nobody can afford to ignore the fact that drug usage is on the rise at an alarming rate. Saying that the government’s role and responsibility in finding a solution to the issue are all-encompassing is pointless; everyone has a role to play.
How long can we tolerate our complacency and lack of interest in what is occurring in our own community? Can we just watch as others use drugs to relieve their anxiety, stress, and despair, even our own children and those around us? Acting immediately is essential since waiting will only harm society’s well-being. Instead of criticism and condemnation, drug users need compassion and understanding. The negative impacts of drug misuse and use are frequently covered in news articles and on television. In reality, most of the information we learn about drugs comes from those who use and sell them. Those who have recovered and undergone reformation have testified that they would have done anything to purchase harmful drugs. It’s interesting to note that the word “drug” likely derives from the Persian word “drogues,” which refers to the medicinal herbs that ancient Persians produced to treat the sick.
Every year, the international community recognizes International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking to raise awareness of the importance of this problem. Programs are held on such an auspicious occasion to educate the public through seminars, symposia, and discussions. By holding such programmes that involve the government, civil society, educational institutions, religious organizations, and village committees not only in the capital cities of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir but also at the district and block levels, it is worthwhile to implement similar policies in the remote districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Discussions alone won’t be sufficient unless everyone takes appropriate action.
