‘Azadi’ Author Arundhati Roy Wins European Essay Prize for French Translation

Celebrated Author Arundhati Roy Recognized for Contributions to Literature with European Essay Prize

16-06-2023 : Renowned writer Arundhati Roy has been honored with the prestigious 45th European Essay Prize for lifetime achievement. The award, bestowed by the Charles Veillon Foundation, recognizes Roy’s outstanding contributions to the field of essays and literature. Roy received the award for the French translation of her essay compilation titled ‘Azadi’ (2021).

The jury of the Prix European de l’Essai praised Roy’s work for its profound reflection on the construction of the world and its relationship with language. They noted that Roy utilizes the essay as a powerful form of combat, analyzing the rise of fascism and its structural implications. In an era where the influence of fascism is increasingly prevalent, the jury commended Roy for her essays, which provide refuge and insight for a diverse range of readers. Additionally, the jury recognized Roy’s unwavering commitment to political action.

In ‘Azadi’, Roy explores the concept of freedom in a world marked by the emergence of growing authoritarianism. The collection of essays delves into various themes, including reflections on language—both public and private—and the role of fiction and alternative imaginings in the present context.

Arundhati Roy, based in Delhi, has earned both national and international acclaim for her literary works. Her debut novel, ‘The God of Small Things,’ won the prestigious Booker Prize, further establishing her as a prominent voice in contemporary literature. Subsequent works like ‘The Ministry of Utmost Happiness’ and ‘My Seditious Heart’ have also garnered critical acclaim.

As the recipient of the European Essay Prize, Roy will be presented with a prize amount of CHF 20,000 (approximately Rs 18 lakh) at an award ceremony scheduled for September 12 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Established in 1975, the Charles Veillon Foundation’s award recognizes books or the body of work by authors that contribute to the enrichment and dissemination of evolving thought. The foundation aims to bring attention to authors whose works provide valuable insights into current societies, their practices, and ideologies.

Over the years, esteemed authors such as Alexandre Zinoviev, Edgar Morin, Tzvetan Todorov, Amin Maalouf, Siri Hustvedt, Alessandro Baricco, Jean Starobinski, Iso Camartin, and Peter von Matt have been recipients of the European Essay Prize, further highlighting the caliber of Roy’s achievement.
