CM Omar Abdullah Leads Kashmir Marathon, Aiming for Global Recognition of Valley’s First International Event

SRINAGAR, Oct 20:  Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took the spotlight on Sunday, leading the inaugural Kashmir Marathon, the region’s first international athletic event. Abdullah, a fitness enthusiast, ran 21 kilometers (half marathon) alongside nearly 2,000 athletes from across India and abroad, marking a significant milestone in the valley’s sports and tourism sectors. The event was also graced by Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty, who joined Abdullah at the flag-off ceremony, underscoring the event’s prominence.

The marathon attracted elite long-distance runners, including Asian gold medalists and top athletes from Europe and Africa, positioning it as a key sporting event in the region. Abdullah, aged 54, expressed his gratitude to the organizers, stakeholders, and the people of Srinagar for their enthusiastic support. He conveyed his hopes for the event’s future, aspiring for the Kashmir Marathon to become a major international event recognized globally in the athletic calendar.

“The way the people of Srinagar came out to support the runners was truly heartening. I hope the Kashmir Marathon grows to become one of the top events in the world,” Abdullah stated. Reflecting on his participation, he added, “I congratulate all the athletes who competed. Personally, I wasn’t sure if I could complete 21 kilometers, as the longest I had run previously was around 12 or 13 kilometers. But running alongside other athletes inspired me to finish the race.”

The marathon, organized by the Department of Tourism, aimed to showcase the “improved” security situation in the valley and promote Kashmir as a safe, tourist-friendly destination. Tourism Director Raja Yaqoob highlighted the marathon’s significance in conveying a message of peace and inviting international visitors to experience the region’s natural beauty and hospitality.

Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty commended the event’s scale and organization, noting the impressive turnout. Shetty expressed his admiration for the opportunity to run 42 kilometers amidst the breathtaking scenery of Kashmir, which he described as a “paradise for marathon enthusiasts.”
