J&K Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather Confirms Resolution for Restoration of Special Status Sent to Authorities
SRINAGAR, Nov 11: Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather announced today that the resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for the restoration of special status has been formally sent to the concerned authorities. The resolution, which was passed on August 5, calls for dialogue aimed at the “restoration of special status and constitutional guarantees” for the region, while also urging the establishment of the necessary “constitutional mechanisms” to facilitate this restoration. The motion received overwhelming support from all parties except the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was approved by a voice vote.
While addressing the media in Srinagar, Rather confirmed that the resolution was forwarded to the appropriate authorities on the very same day it was passed in the Assembly. He emphasized that he remains politically neutral on the matter, stating, “I am a non-aligned person and have no concern with any political party.” Rather encouraged reporters to engage with the political parties directly for their stance on the issue.
When questioned about the rise in encounters since the formation of the new government, Rather responded by highlighting that law and order are not under the jurisdiction of the state government. He pointed out that law and order, along with police control, are overseen by the central government. Further, Rather assured that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has instructed the law enforcement agencies to strengthen security measures in a bid to curb such incidents.
The resolution passed by the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has become a significant point of political discussion, as it calls for a re-evaluation of the region’s constitutional status following the controversial abrogation of Article 370. The next steps are now awaited as the concerned authorities review the resolution.
