Air India CEO Campbell Wilson Steps Down from Role: Sources
Exit comes as Tata Group reviews top leadership and ongoing operational challenges at national carrier
MUMBAI, Apr 7: Air India Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson has stepped down from his position, a source familiar with the matter confirmed on Monday.
According to the source, Wilson conveyed his intention to resign to the board, following which his exit was accepted. An official response from Air India is still awaited.
Wilson had taken charge as CEO and Managing Director in July 2022 after Ilker Ayci declined the role earlier that year amid controversy. His appointment came shortly after the Tata Group reacquired the airline from the government in January 2022, marking a significant shift in the carrier’s ownership and strategic direction.
Sources indicate that the Tata Group had already begun exploring leadership options earlier this year, as Wilson’s tenure was scheduled to continue until 2027. His resignation now accelerates the transition at a critical phase for the airline.
The development also comes at a time when Air India Express, the airline’s low-cost arm, is without a chief following the departure of its Managing Director Aloke Singh in March after completing his tenure.
Wilson’s leadership had faced scrutiny since the fatal crash of a London-bound Boeing 787-8 flight shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad in June last year, which claimed 241 lives. The incident intensified pressure on the airline’s management amid ongoing transformation efforts.
With the top position now vacant, the focus shifts to the Tata Group’s next move in steering Air India through its restructuring and growth roadmap.
