Akamai Signs $11.6 Billion Cloud Deal With Anthropic
India, Sep 25 : Akamai Technologies has signed an $11.6 billion cloud services agreement with artificial intelligence company Anthropic, marking a major expansion of the companies’ collaboration as demand for AI computing infrastructure accelerates.
Under the agreement, Akamai will provide cloud infrastructure and computing capacity to Anthropic over a long-term period. The deal also includes a warrant that could allow Anthropic to acquire up to a 5% stake in Akamai, according to the company.
The announcement sent Akamai shares sharply higher in extended trading on Thursday. The company said the agreement adds to more than $2.8 billion in multi-year cloud infrastructure contracts it has announced with customers during 2026.
The partnership comes as AI companies increasingly require large amounts of computing power to train and operate advanced models. Cloud providers are consequently investing in data-centre capacity, specialised computing systems and networking infrastructure to meet rising demand.
For Anthropic, securing long-term infrastructure capacity provides additional computing resources as it expands its AI products and services. The agreement also reflects the growing importance of partnerships between AI developers and cloud infrastructure companies.
The deal highlights how the rapid expansion of generative and agentic AI is reshaping the cloud computing market. AI workloads require substantial processing and storage capabilities, prompting technology companies to enter large, long-term infrastructure agreements.
Akamai, traditionally known for its content delivery and internet security services, has been expanding its cloud computing business. The latest agreement represents one of the company’s largest commitments involving AI infrastructure.
The deal also illustrates the increasing financial scale of the AI infrastructure sector, where companies are committing billions of dollars to computing resources to support the development and deployment of increasingly sophisticated models.
