Delhi High Court Appoints Seven New Judges, Bench Strength Rises to 50
Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya administered the oath to seven judicial officers elevated as additional judges following the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation.
NEW DELHI, Sept 21: The Delhi High Court’s working strength increased to 50 on Monday after seven judicial officers from the Delhi district judiciary were sworn in as additional judges.
Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya administered the oath of office to Nivedita Anil Sharma, Nisha Sahay Saxena, Sanjay Sharma, Bharat Parashar, Aditi Choudhary, Dinesh Bhatt and Arun Bhardwaj during a ceremony held on the High Court premises.
Following the oath taking, the Chief Justice congratulated the newly appointed judges as they formally assumed their responsibilities on the High Court bench.
Justices Nivedita Anil Sharma and Nisha Sahay Saxena took their oaths in English, while the remaining five judges took the oath in Hindi.
The appointments were formally notified by the Central Government on September 19, following the Supreme Court collegium’s recommendation for their elevation from the district judiciary.
The seven appointments come as the Delhi High Court continues to work with vacancies against its sanctioned capacity. The court has an approved strength of 60 judges, meaning the latest additions bring its present working strength to 50.
The elevation of serving judicial officers from the district courts is part of the regular process through which judges are appointed to the High Court. With the new judges joining the bench, the Delhi High Court will have greater judicial capacity to handle cases across its various jurisdictions.
The swearing-in ceremony marked the formal completion of the appointment process for the seven officers and their transition from the Delhi district judiciary to the High Court.
