Gautam Adani Overtakes Mukesh Ambani as Asia’s Wealthiest Billionaire

Surge in Adani Group stocks boosts Gautam Adani’s net worth past Mukesh Ambani amid shifting market dynamics

NEW DELHI, Apr 17: In a significant reshuffle of Asia’s wealth hierarchy, Gautam Adani has once again emerged as the continent’s richest individual, overtaking long-time rival Mukesh Ambani. The development follows a sustained rally in shares of the diversified Adani Group, which has sharply elevated Adani’s net worth.

According to the latest billionaire rankings, Adani’s wealth now stands at USD 92.6 billion, surpassing Ambani’s USD 90.8 billion. This shift not only repositions Adani at the top in India but also restores his standing as the richest person across Asia.

Stock Rally Drives Wealth Surge

The surge in Adani’s fortune is largely attributed to rising valuations of the group’s listed companies. The conglomerate, which spans ports, energy, airports, and infrastructure, has benefited from growing investor confidence tied to India’s economic expansion and the global push toward clean energy.

Adani’s business empire includes the country’s largest private seaport network, a dominant presence in renewable energy production, and leadership in private airport operations. His companies are also deeply embedded in sectors such as logistics, coal trading, and energy transmission, positioning the group as a key player in India’s infrastructure growth story.

Currently ranked No. 19 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Adani’s wealth is primarily derived from his stakes across 10 publicly traded companies. The recent upswing in their stock prices has added billions in market capitalization, accelerating his rise in global wealth rankings.

Ambani’s Gains Lag Behind

In contrast, Ambani’s wealth anchored in Reliance Industries has grown at a relatively slower pace. Despite maintaining strong positions in energy, telecom, and retail, the incremental gains have not matched the sharp upward momentum seen in Adani Group stocks.

Ambani, who held the title of India’s richest person for over a decade, has seen his lead erode multiple times in recent years as Adani’s aggressive expansion strategy reshaped the competitive landscape.

A Rivalry Marked by Fluctuations

The contest between Adani and Ambani has been marked by frequent shifts. Adani first claimed the top spot in February 2022, driven by a rapid increase in his companies’ stock prices. However, his position was challenged following a report by Hindenburg Research, which triggered a steep decline in Adani Group’s market value wiping out nearly USD 100 billion at its lowest point.

This setback allowed Ambani to regain the top position, but the rivalry remained dynamic. By mid-2024, Adani once again overtook Ambani, buoyed by infrastructure investments and the energy transition narrative. The leadership changed hands again in 2025 before Adani reclaimed the position this month.

Global Billionaire Rankings

On the global stage, Elon Musk continues to dominate the wealth rankings with an estimated net worth of USD 656 billion, far ahead of his closest competitors. He is followed by Larry Page at USD 286 billion and Jeff Bezos at USD 269 billion.

Adani and Ambani remain the only Indian billionaires within the top 50 globally, highlighting their significant influence in the international business arena.

Expanding Business Footprint

The Adani Group has steadily transformed into a diversified conglomerate with interests spanning transport and logistics, integrated energy systems, natural resources, airports, defence, data centres, cement, media, and urban infrastructure. Its growing footprint reflects a strategic focus on sectors aligned with long-term economic growth and sustainability trends.

The group also emphasizes its milestone of becoming the first Indian business empire led by a first-generation entrepreneur to surpass a market capitalization of USD 200 billion.

As market conditions continue to evolve, the rivalry between Adani and Ambani remains a defining feature of India’s corporate landscape, with leadership positions likely to shift in response to stock performance, investment strategies, and global economic trends.
