Indian Embassy in Kuwait Rescues Tamil Nadu Domestic Worker Facing Torture Allegations
Woman alleges torture, starvation and months of unpaid wages; seeks assistance to return to India
NEW DELHI, Sep 4: The Indian Embassy in Kuwait has extended assistance to a Tamil Nadu woman who alleged that she was subjected to torture, denied adequate food and deprived of wages while working as a domestic help in the Gulf nation.
The woman, identified as Vanitha from Kallakurichi district, had appealed to authorities in Tamil Nadu through a video, seeking intervention to facilitate her return to India.
Addressing reporters during a regular media briefing, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian mission acted promptly after becoming aware of the allegations.
“As soon as our embassy became aware of this issue, it offered assistance,” Jaiswal said.
He added that Vanitha was currently staying at the Indian Embassy and assured that the government remained committed to protecting the interests and welfare of Indians living abroad.
“We remain committed to doing our best for the well-being, safety and welfare of Indian nationals abroad,” the spokesperson said.
According to the woman’s allegations, she travelled to Kuwait around three months ago with the help of an employment agent. She claimed that her employers had subjected her to harsh treatment and had failed to provide adequate food for an extended period.
Vanitha further alleged that she had not received her wages for two months.
In the video, she is seen with her head covered by a scarf and making an emotional appeal to officials in Tamil Nadu. She requested the district administration and police authorities to intervene and help bring her back home.
Her allegations have prompted assistance from the Indian diplomatic mission, which is now facilitating support for her safety and welfare.
During the same briefing, Jaiswal also addressed a separate query concerning remarks reportedly made by Birmingham Mayor Zaker Choudhry regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
Responding to the issue, the spokesperson reiterated India’s position, stating that the entire Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh region is an integral and inalienable part of the country.
