Jammu and Kashmir Launches Massive Monsoon Preparedness Drive to Prevent Floods and Landslides

J&K, July 01 : The Jammu and Kashmir administration has intensified its monsoon preparedness measures following forecasts of increased rainfall across the Union Territory. Authorities have activated emergency response mechanisms to minimise the risk of floods, flash floods, landslides, and other weather related disasters during the ongoing monsoon season.

District administrations have begun reviewing disaster management plans while ensuring that rescue equipment, relief materials, and emergency personnel remain available around the clock.

Officials from the Disaster Management Authority, Public Works Department, Jal Shakti Department, Health Department, Police, Fire and Emergency Services, and National Disaster Response Force have coordinated preparedness measures across vulnerable districts.

Special attention has been given to flood prone areas located along the Jhelum, Chenab, Tawi, and other major rivers where heavy rainfall may increase water levels.

Authorities have started cleaning drainage systems and removing encroachments that obstruct natural water flow in urban areas to reduce the risk of waterlogging.

Engineers are inspecting bridges, roads, retaining walls, and vulnerable mountain stretches where landslides frequently occur during heavy rainfall.

The administration has positioned heavy earth-moving machinery in sensitive locations so blocked roads can be reopened quickly if landslides occur.

Emergency operation centres have been activated to provide real-time weather updates, coordinate rescue operations, and issue public advisories.

Residents living near riverbanks and hilly areas have been advised to remain alert and follow official warnings issued by local authorities.

The Meteorological Department continues monitoring rainfall patterns and sharing forecasts with district administrations for timely action.

Health authorities have also stocked medicines and emergency medical supplies at hospitals anticipating possible disease outbreaks associated with the monsoon season.

Educational institutions and local bodies have been instructed to spread awareness regarding disaster preparedness and emergency response procedures.

Experts have emphasised that climate variability has increased the frequency of extreme rainfall events in Himalayan regions, making preparedness more important than ever.
