Major Clearance Efforts Underway After Landslide Hits Jammu-Srinagar Highway

15-06-2023 : The Jammu-Srinagar national highway experienced a major disruption on Thursday due to a landslide near Ramban town. The landslide occurred around 1 am, blocking the crucial all-weather road that connects Kashmir with the rest of the country. This created a significant challenge for the transportation of goods and the movement of people in the region.

In addition to the landslide, the debris also blocked the mouth of an under-construction tunnel, which is being built to bypass the problematic stretch of the highway. The completion of the tunnel is expected next year and will provide a more stable and reliable route for travelers.

As soon as the landslide occurred, the agency responsible for the four-lane highway project initiated immediate clearance efforts. They deployed workers and machinery to clear the major debris from the road, ensuring the safety and convenience of the stranded travelers.

However, the restoration work faced intermittent challenges due to shooting stones from the nearby hillock. This posed a risk to the clearing operations and further delayed the reopening of the highway. As a precautionary measure, no fresh traffic was allowed from either Jammu or Srinagar in the morning.

The traffic department officials are working diligently to clear the stranded vehicles and restore the traffic flow as soon as possible. Once the debris is completely removed and the road is deemed safe for travel, normal traffic operations will resume on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
