13-06-2023: Omar Abdullah, the leader of the National Conference, emphasized the urgent need for larger political parties with significant representation in the Lok Sabha to take the lead in fostering national-level opposition unity. He expressed concern over the fact that major opposition parties were pitted against each other in regions where they had minimal or no presence.
Abdullah acknowledged the limited role of his own party, as they could only win a few seats in Jammu and Kashmir. He stressed that unity among parties with 40 to 50 seats should be established first before expecting smaller regional outfits to unite. He pointed out instances where parties from different states competed in elections where they had no foothold, which undermined the message of unity. Abdullah suggested that larger parties should unite first, paving the way for discussions on unity among smaller parties.
When questioned about the possibility of holding assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah stated that the National Conference was ready to hold both the Lok Sabha and assembly polls simultaneously if deemed necessary by the government. He questioned why assembly elections could not be conducted separately if parliamentary elections could take place.
Responding to concerns about the inadequate supply of water and electricity in certain areas, Abdullah acknowledged the multiple crises faced by Jammu and Kashmir across various sectors. He attributed the hesitation to conduct elections to the discontent among the people and the overall crisis prevailing in the region. Abdullah noted that every department in the state was affected, contributing to the postponement of elections.
The National Conference convened a party meeting to address the alarming issue of drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah emphasized that drug addiction posed a significant threat to the region’s future, and he expressed concern over the government’s inaction. He criticized the lack of attention given to this critical issue, despite the government’s focus on tourism and investment. Abdullah stressed the need to combat drug addiction and the associated crimes, including the rise in homicides.
Abdullah urged the administration to investigate the sources of drugs entering Jammu and Kashmir. He questioned how drugs were able to penetrate the borders if they were genuinely sealed, raising doubts about potential weaknesses in the fence along the Line of Control (LoC) or the anti-infiltration grid. He called for transparency and requested that the government inform the public about the origins of the drugs. Abdullah emphasized that the goal was to discourage drug use within the region.
Regarding the upcoming movie “72 Hoorain,” Abdullah addressed the issue of religious intolerance, asserting that Islam was not a fragile religion that could be harmed by a film. He acknowledged the presence of individuals harboring hatred towards Islam and Muslims but encouraged his community not to be disheartened. Abdullah emphasized that Muslims had faced similar challenges throughout history and would continue to face them in the future.
