President Droupadi Murmu to Embark on State Visits to Suriname and Serbia

02-06-2023 : President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to undertake official visits to Suriname and Serbia from June 4 to June 7, marking her first state visit since assuming office in July 2022.

The visit to Suriname comes in response to an invitation extended by Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi. During her stay in Suriname, President Murmu will engage in special discussions with President Santokhi, focusing on bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest. Additionally, she will actively participate in various events and activities planned during the visit. The visit is expected to strengthen ties between India and Suriname and foster cooperation in diverse fields.

Following her visit to Suriname, President Murmu will proceed to Serbia on June 7. This visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. The President will engage in bilateral talks with President Vucic, aiming to deepen the diplomatic relations and explore avenues for enhanced collaboration between the two nations. The visit to Serbia underscores India’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Balkan region and furthering cooperation in areas of common interest.

Saurabh Kumar, Secretary, East, in the External Affairs Ministry, highlighted the significance of the visits, emphasizing the opportunity for productive discussions and the advancement of strategic partnerships. Sanjay Verma, Secretary, West, also expressed that these visits demonstrate India’s proactive diplomatic engagements with Suriname and Serbia.

President Droupadi Murmu’s visits to Suriname and Serbia hold great potential in expanding bilateral cooperation, promoting cultural exchanges, and fostering mutual understanding between India and these nations.
