Punjab Police Seizes 64 Kg Heroin in Amritsar, Two Arrested in Major Drug Bust
Two accused arrested as probe reveals links with foreign handlers and Pakistan-based smugglers
CHANDIGARH, Apr 18: In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, the Punjab Police on Saturday announced the busting of a cross border drug smuggling module in Amritsar, leading to the arrest of two individuals and the recovery of over 64 kilograms of heroin.
Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said the operation marked a significant breakthrough under the state government’s ongoing anti-drug campaign ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’. Authorities recovered 64.62 kilograms of heroin from the possession of the accused during the coordinated action.
The operation was jointly carried out by the Counter-Intelligence wing of Punjab Police and the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC) in Amritsar, highlighting a strategic effort to dismantle organized drug networks operating across borders.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Sarwan Singh alias Gujjar and Shamsher Singh alias Shera, both residents of Amritsar. Preliminary investigations indicate that the duo was part of a larger international smuggling network with links extending to handlers based in Portugal and smugglers operating from Pakistan.
Officials stated that the accused were actively involved in facilitating the transportation and distribution of narcotics, posing a serious threat to public safety and national security.
An FIR has been registered at the SSOC Police Station in Amritsar, and further investigation is underway to trace additional links and identify other members of the network. Authorities are also working to uncover the financial trail associated with the smuggling operation.
The latest seizure underscores the intensified efforts of Punjab Police to curb drug trafficking and dismantle cross-border criminal syndicates.
