28-12-2022 : Ratan Tata is an Indian business magnate and philanthropist who is the chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, one of India’s largest conglomerates. He was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India.
Tata received a bachelor’s degree in architecture with a minor in structural engineering from Cornell University in 1962. He then worked at Jones & Emmons in Los Angeles for a short period before joining the family business.
Tata’s career at Tata Sons began in 1961, when he joined the company as an apprentice. He worked in various departments, including sales, accounts, and administration, and gained valuable experience in the steel, engineering, and electrical businesses. In 1981, he was appointed the chairman of Tata Industries, a group of companies focused on high-technology industries.
Under Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group expanded significantly, with a focus on new technologies and global expansion. Some of the key initiatives undertaken by Tata during his tenure include the acquisition of British steelmaker Corus and the launch of Tata Nano, a low-cost car targeted at the Indian market.
Tata is also known for his philanthropy and involvement in social causes. He has donated generously to various charitable causes and is a member of the board of trustees of several organizations, including the Tata Medical Center and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research.
In 2012, Tata retired as the chairman of Tata Sons and was succeeded by Cyrus Mistry. However, he continues to be involved in the Tata Group as the chairman emeritus and serves on the boards of several Tata companies. Ratan Tata is currently celebrating his 85th birthday.
