Rising Healthcare Costs Are Pushing Families Into Financial Crisis
Affordable treatment and insurance coverage remain key to healthcare equity
Mumbai, Apr 04 : The rising cost of medical treatment is emerging as a major concern across India, turning health emergencies into financial disasters for many families. The ongoing healthcare affordability crisis highlights deep structural issues within the system.
Out-of-pocket expenditure remains high, with many households forced to dip into savings or take loans to cover medical bills. Even middle-income families are increasingly vulnerable, especially when faced with chronic illnesses or hospitalisation.
Although government schemes and insurance programmes have expanded in recent years, coverage gaps and limited awareness continue to restrict their effectiveness. Private healthcare, which dominates the sector, often remains out of reach for a large section of the population.
Ensuring affordability requires stronger regulation of treatment costs, expansion of insurance coverage, and improved public healthcare facilities. Without these reforms, access to quality healthcare will remain unequal.
Healthcare should not be a privilege determined by income. A system that protects citizens from financial hardship is essential for a just and equitable society.
