Russia Intensifies Drone Offensive Across Ukraine Amid Stalled Peace Talks
Fresh wave of overnight attacks damages energy infrastructure as diplomatic efforts fail to achieve breakthrough
MOSCOW/KYIV, May 19: The conflict between Russia and Ukraine escalated sharply after Russian forces launched one of the largest drone offensives in recent weeks, targeting multiple Ukrainian cities and critical energy facilities overnight. Ukrainian officials confirmed widespread damage to infrastructure, while emergency teams rushed to restore electricity in affected regions.
According to Ukrainian authorities, dozens of drones struck residential and industrial zones in Kyiv, Kharkiv and Odesa, forcing civilians to seek shelter for several hours. Air defence systems intercepted many incoming drones, yet several managed to hit strategic installations, disrupting power supply and transportation services.
The renewed offensive comes at a time when international mediation attempts aimed at reducing tensions have shown little progress. Negotiations involving European diplomats and representatives from the United Nations have failed to produce any agreement on ceasefire terms.
Military analysts believe the latest strikes are intended to weaken Ukraine’s energy capacity before the peak summer season. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Moscow of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure to create panic and instability.
Meanwhile, the Russian Defence Ministry claimed the operations were directed only at military linked facilities and accused Ukraine of launching cross-border drone attacks into Russian territory earlier this week.
The continued hostilities have also deepened humanitarian concerns. Thousands of civilians remain displaced in eastern Ukraine, while aid agencies warned of shortages of electricity, water and medical support in heavily affected regions.
Western nations, including the United States and members of the European Union, condemned the escalation and reiterated military and financial support for Kyiv.
Experts say the conflict is entering a more dangerous phase as both sides increasingly rely on drone warfare and long-range attacks. Security observers fear that continued escalation could destabilise wider parts of Eastern Europe if diplomatic channels remain frozen.
