Admiral Krishna Swaminathan says evolving threats are creating fresh challenges as the Navy commissions deep sea diving vessel INS Nipun.
MUMBAI, Aug. 31: Navy Chief Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on Monday described the current period as one of significant strategic change, warning that the maritime environment is becoming increasingly contested amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia.
Addressing the gathering after the commissioning of the Indian Navy’s deep-sea diving vessel INS Nipun in Mumbai, the Navy chief said the nature of threats facing the maritime domain is continuously changing.
He noted that emerging risks are taking newer forms, adding to the complexity of challenges confronting maritime forces.
The commissioning of INS Nipun marks a significant addition to the Navy’s underwater operational capabilities. The specialised vessel is designed to support deep sea diving missions at depths of up to 300 metres.
INS Nipun is also equipped to undertake rapid submarine rescue operations, strengthening the Navy’s ability to respond to underwater emergencies.
Beyond military operations, the vessel can be utilised for disaster relief and humanitarian assistance missions, allowing it to support a wider range of contingencies.
Admiral Swaminathan said the changing strategic environment requires continued attention to maritime preparedness and the ability to respond effectively to emerging challenges.
“We are living today through a period of significant strategic churn; the maritime environment is becoming increasingly contested,” he said.
The Navy’s focus on specialised platforms such as INS Nipun comes against the backdrop of a rapidly changing security environment, where underwater rescue, deep-sea operations and humanitarian response capabilities are gaining greater importance.
